Our Purpose For This Class:
From Sonoma County Office of Education (link here for their full statement):
The purpose of ELD instruction is to actively engage students in learning English vocabulary and language structures. Although ELD lessons can be related to academic content, it is critical that the core purpose of this instruction—English acquisition—be maintained.
Sources We Use in This Class:
Primary novel: Lupita Manana by Patricia Beatty
Language and Writing Portfolio: English 3D Course B, Vol. 2, by Kate Kinsella.
Published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers.
Companion textbook: English 3D, Course B, Vol 2
[abstract from book] "English 3D was designed to accelerate language development for English learners who possess agility with social interactional English while lacking the advanced linguistic knowledge and skills required by complex coursework in school. English 3D propels students to higher language proficiency through a consistent series of lessons derived from research-based principles and classroom-tested practices that maximize students' verbal and written engagement with conceptually rigorous content"--Teaching Guide Course B, Volume 2
Comprehension Workbook: Six-Way Paragraphs In the Content Areas, Middle Level., Jamestown Publishers. This workbook teaches students from four general content areas: the humanities, social studies, science, or mathematics (with subcategories). Each reading passage employs six essential questions, the most important of which is the "main idea" question. The student must label 1) the main idea, 2) statement that is too broad to be the main idea, 3) statement that is too narrow to be the main idea. Students are asked to do 5 more questions in the following 5 categories: subject matter, supporting details, conclusion, clarifying devices, and vocabulary in context. (taken from page xix, Six-Way Paragraphs workbook)
Grading Policy
Students are graded on:
- their completion of pages assigned in the portfolio (workbook answers are checked together in class)
- group and partner read-aloud participation
- study questions pertaining to the novel, Lupita Manana (we check answers together in class)
- vocabulary quizzes
- 6-Way Paragraph answers and read-aloud time (we check answers together in class)
I grade on the basic universal scale: A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F 0-59%
Bathroom Policy:
Students are given 8 bathroom passes at the beginning of the semester. They are required to fill out the pass, then have me initial it, then take it with them to the restroom or to get a drink of water.
Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle to class; they must step outside on the porch to take sips of water.
Students may not go to their car, a locker, or the office using these passes-- they need to ask for a different pass from me.
Mask Policy:
Students are required to wear masks at all times inside the classroom. We do take "mask breaks" when we step outside for a break.
Behavior Policy
- Students are required to use their best manners when in class.
- Loud talking, laughing, and silly behavior will not be tolerated.
- When students do group or partner work, polite, considerate talk is expected; listening politely and quietly is a skill and a requirement for this class.
- A seating chart will be implemented if I see a general pattern of behavior not in line with the professional expectations that SVHS has outlined in its Behavior Expectations Handbook.
